    What is Neurodivergent?

ADHD, Autism, Aspergers, Sensory Processing Disorder, communication issues, executive function, executive dysfunction, processing delays, difficulty focusing…. Oh crap, I forgot my backpack. Nevermind. It’s right here. But now I don’t know if I did that thing I was supposed to do yesterday.

If your brain works differently, you just might be experiencing neurodivergence. Basically a five-dollar word that people use to describe brains that work differently than the majority of the population, people who would be referred to as “neurotypical.” Which is just another five-dollar word to say, “Seems like your brain approaches life about the same as most other people’s.”

The challenge is that sometimes it’s just really hard to explain how our brain works. I mean, we are in our own mind all of the time, so how it runs is “normal” for us. However, what we do notice is when our patterns cause us repetitive problems in life. Stuff like forgetting to put appointments on the calendar, deadlines for work projects or school assignments, feeling overwhelmed just going to the grocery store, or wanting to run away from crowds of people.

While these things are not necessarily evidence of neurodiversity, they might be. Because the human brain is amazing, we often find our own ways of coping when we notice we seem a little different than our peers. Unfortunately, some of those strategies are short-lived. They work for a little bit, until they fail.

That’s what I’m here for; to help you discover more about how your brain works and to play to your strengths so that you have a much higher chance of lasting success. I have over 25 years working with people who have diagnoses that fall within the “neurodivergent” category. Long before I became a counselor, I taught children and adults with different diagnoses to ride horses for therapy and individuals who would be considered “neurodivergent” were my jam even then.

Whether you are wondering of you might be neurodivergent, you have a diagnosis, your kiddo or teen has one, or you just want to find out how to be more successful as a parent, hit me up for a consultation. Who knows? You might find ways to feel a little more competent and maybe even spend less time looking for your keys, phone, and that thing that was just in your hand 5 seconds ago…
